Ferris State University announced the appointment of Steve Casula as the school's new assistant coach in March of 2017. He serves as the offensive coordinator and and will start his second season at FSU in 2018, coaching the tight ends and the running backs.

Casula, who most recently served as the interim head coach at Davenport University, brings considerable collegiate coaching experience to the Bulldogs.

In his first season, Ferris State reached the D2 Playoffs for the fourth year in a row in 2017, finishing with an 11-2 record while making its second-straight national quarterfinal showing.

His appointment helped fill a void left on the FSU staff due to the departure of assistant coaches Kyle Nystrom and Sparky McEwen, who both earned head coaching opportunities at fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schools in Northern Michigan and Davenport, respectively.

Since August of 2014, Casula had served as the offensive coordinator and assistant coach at Davenport, which made its program debut under former FSU defensive coordinator Lou Esposito. Along with Esposito, as the first assistant coaching hire he helped establish the foundation for Davenport's program and actively recruited the entire Midwest region in addition to being responsible for the development and performance of the Panthers' offensive attack. Casula helped DU compile a 6-5 overall mark in its initial campaign.

Following the departure of Esposito to become the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan in January, Casula was appointed interim head coach and filled the role until the hiring of McEwen in late February. He helped the incoming GLIAC member ink its 2017 recruiting class and served as a liaison with compliance, financial aid, housing and admissions during his Davenport tenure.

Prior to joining the Davenport staff, Casula served as the tight ends and H-Backs coach in 2013 at Colgate under head coach Dick Biddle. He also served in an active role coaching five of the squad's six special teams units and coached a first-team all-league fullback in Ed Pavalko. His unit established program records for receptions and yardage at the tight end position and he actively recruited the Chicago, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia areas.

Casula spent the 2012 campaign as the tight ends and fullbacks coach at NCAA Division I Western Michigan as part of head coach Bill Cubit's staff. During his time on the Broncos' staff, Casula guided the Western Michigan tight ends and actively recruited West Michigan along with the California Junior College ranks in addition to other areas. He was the squad's academic and walk-on coordinator and led community service initiatives in addition to being responsible for quality control, playbook maintenance, opponent breakdowns and more. He was tabbed as an assistant coach at WMU after serving the 2010 and 2011 seasons as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line.

The Wilmington, Del., native was also a student assistant for the University of Delaware for two seasons under head coach K.C. Keeler, where he worked primarily with the offensive line and earned a bachelor's degree. Casula also worked as an assistant at a pair of prep schools at the start of his coaching career, spending time as an assistant at Kennett (Pa.) High School during the 2007 season along with Delcastle (Del.) during the 2006 campaign. Casula, who earned his master's degree from Western Michigan, earned all-state honors as a senior while a student at Delaware football power Salesianum High School and served as the team captain during his final season.

Casula and his wife Stephanie have two children, Audrey and Paulie.
