Big Rapids, Mich. - The seventh-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad finished the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge with a split on Saturday (Sept. 13) as the last day of action took patron Denver, Colo.
FSU beat 11th-ranked Concordia-St. Paul in a 3-0 sweep in the opener before falling to third-ranked MSU Denver by a 3-1 score in the finale, closing the tourney with a 2-2 overall mark.
In the win over Concordia-St. Paul, Ferris State came away with a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 win at the Auraria Event Center.
Sophomore Gabby Piazza paced FSU with a team-high 14 kills while Emily May added nine kills. Setter Hayley Wegener compiled 27 assists to go with 11 digs overall. Lilly Peterson chipped in with seven kills to help the cause.
Ferris State posted a .211 attack percentage in the opener with 41 kills and 18 attack errors on 109 attempts. FSU also had 51 digs and posted eight block assists, seven service aces and two solo blocks.
In the second match against host MSU Denver, the Bulldogs dropped the first set 25-17 before coming back to record a 25-12 win in set two. But, MSU Denver won set three 25-18 and then sealed the victory with a 25-23 win in the fourth frame.
Piazza again led the Bulldogs with 15 kills and Emma Bleecher added 12 kills. Both Jasmine Wellet and Wegener totaled 13 digs. Wegener picked up 28 assists. Bleecher finished with three solo blocks and May had four assisted blocks at the net as did Peterson.
FSU hit .164 overall in the setback, coming away with 44 kills and 22 attack mistakes on 134 tries. The Bulldogs had 52 digs and 14 block assists with four solo blocks and four service aces.
With the split on day two, the Bulldogs now own a 5-3 overall record thru two weeks of action.
The Bulldogs will host Michigan Tech in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. (ET) inside Bulldog Arena. The contest will also mark FSU's first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.
