Ferris State Hockey Falls to #3 Michigan State in GLI Semifinal, Will Face Miami (Ohio) in Third-Place Game

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team made its fifth ever appearance in the Great Lakes Invitational (GLI) Sunday (Dec. 28) at the Van Andel Arena and suffered a 5-2 setback against #3 Michigan State in the semifinal game.

The Bulldogs (4-15-0, 3-9-0 CCHA) fell behind 4-0 and battled back within two goals but a late score from the Spartans (13-4-0, 5-3-0 B1G) sealed a victory for MSU. In the other GLI semifinal game, Michigan Tech defeated Miami (Ohio) 5-2, so FSU is set for a matchup with Miami (Ohio) Monday (Dec. 29).

The Spartans scored four unanswered goals to start the game with the first coming from Cole Burke at 7:41 in the first period. Burke's first collegiate goal was assisted by Patrick Geary and Maxim Strbak.

Anthony Romani scored at 8:27 to give MSU a 2-0 advantage. Charlie Stramel and Colin Ralph assisted, and the Spartans held their lead into the first intermission.

Stramel scored his seventh goal of the year 35 seconds into period two with Daniel Russell and Geary assisting. Tommi Mannisto scored a fourth Spartan goal at 4:52 as Tiernan Shoudy and Ralph assisted.

Martin Lundberg drew the start for the Bulldogs but was pulled after Stramel's goal. Hobie Hedquist came in for the final 35:08 and stopped 18-19 shots faced.

Carter Rapalje put the Bulldogs on the board at 18:35 with his fifth goal of the season. Riley Wallack won a faceoff to Gavin Best who fired a quick shot. Rapalje redirected the shot past MSU goaltender Trey Augustine for FSU's first goal. Best got his fourth helper of the season and Wallack got his second.

Josh Zary scored his nation-leading 30^th career power play goal at 3:02 in the third period and pulled the Bulldogs within two goals at 4-2. Xavier Jean-Louis took a shot that Zary redirected for his team-leading eighth goal of the year. Jean-Louis collected his seventh helper and Max Itagaki also assisted, his fourth this year.

Stramel tacked on a power play goal for MSU at 7:58 with Anthonay Romani and Matt Basgall assisting. Stramel's eighth of the season helped clinch a 5-2 win for the Spartans.

For the game, FSU was 1-5 on the power play and 5-6 on the penalty kill. MSU outshot FSU 30-23 and won 35 faceoffs to Ferris State's 34. The Bulldogs blocked 11 shots while the Spartans blocked nine.

Individually, Zary finished with a game-high 15 faceoff wins while Valtteri Piironen paced all skaters with three blocks. Zary also had a game-high five shots on goal.

Ferris State will face Miami (Ohio) in the third-place game Monday (Dec. 29). The game is scheduled for a 3:37 p.m. (ET) puck drop with live coverage provided on Sunny 97.3 FM. Fans can also watch the game via pay-per-view on Midco Sports Plus.
