FSU Sweeps SVSU To Reach Regional Championship Match For Third Time In Last Four Years!

Big Rapids, Mich. - The top-seeded Ferris State University women's volleyball squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship match for the third time in four seasons as the Bulldogs swept fifth-seeded Saginaw Valley State by a 3-0 score in the regional semifinals on Friday (Dec. 2) night inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs battled back to win the opening set 25-23 and then captured the second frame 25-18 before sealing the win with a close 28-26 triumph in the third set.

With the win, FSU will advance to the regional final at home for the second-straight year and square off against third-seeded Lewis (Ill.) on Saturday (Dec. 3) starting at 5 p.m. (ET) in Wink Arena. The winner will advance to the 2016 NCAA Division II Elite Eight next week in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Ferris State ran its winning streak to 26 consecutive matches as the Bulldogs notched their 30th victory of the season to improve to 30-5 on the year.

FSU, which was facing SVSU for the third time in the past month, completed the season sweep of the Cardinals by compiling 47 kills against only 18 errors on 149 attempts. FSU hit .195 overall for the night while limiting SVSU to a .148 attack figure.

Junior middle hitter Maria Kronner led the Bulldogs with a match-high 16 kills while both junior Ayanna Buckley and freshman Allyson Cappel added 10 kills each. 

The Bulldogs received 40 assists and 15 digs from senior setter Stephanie Sikorski with junior libero Lauren Reminga notching a match-high 20 digs. Senior Kaley Konjarevich added 19 digs with Cappel chipping in 11 on the FSU side.

Overall, the Bulldogs totaled 78 digs in front of the home fans with seven team blocks and four aces to go with seven service mistakes.

Saginaw Valley State finished with 40 kills and 19 errors on 144 attacks. The Cardinals also recorded 71 digs, two blocks and two aces with six service faults.

Kaylee Schmitt paced SVSU with a team-high 11 kills in the setback while both Emily Nieman and Abbie Toland compiled 15 digs each. Kelly Vellucci added 13 digs and both Tamara Heller and Andrea Brigham chipped in 10 digs each.

Ferris State last advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2013. After reaching the regional final for the first time since 1992 during the 2013 season, the Bulldogs have now advanced to the Midwest Region Championship match for the third time in the last four years. FSU has also now reached the regional semifinals in six consecutive campaigns.

FSU will be seeking its fourth-ever regional championship on Saturday evening. Along with 2013, the Bulldogs also previously won regional crowns back in 1987 and 1989.
