The Ferris State University women's volleyball team will begin preparations for its upcoming 2010 season this Monday (Aug. 16) with is initial preseason training session at the Ewigleben Sports Arena inside FSU's Ewigleben Sports Complex in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Bulldogs, under 15th-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, welcome back three starters along with their top libero and 12 letterwinners from last season's 19-12 team which made the program's 15th appearance in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.
The 15-member 2010 squad is comprised of three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and three freshmen.
Ferris State's first practice will be this Monday (Aug. 16) afternoon from 2:30-5:30 p.m. (EDT). Regular weekday practices during the preseason will feature two per day until Aug. 28. The practice times are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. (EDT) and then from 2-5 p.m. (EDT), but are subject to change.
"We're all anxious to start the season," said Brandel-Wilhelm. "Every season is unique and exciting. We have a number of players returning who will occupy new roles this upcoming season so we're counting upon them to grow and develop into productive contributors. I know this team is entering the preseason with confidence, poise, and the hunger to be highly successful."
The Bulldogs will hold a combined practice with Jackson (Mich.) Community College on Friday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. (EDT) prior to the two teams playing a scrimmage from 3-5 p.m. (EDT) at the Ewigleben Sports Arena. The scrimmage is open to the public and fans are encouraged to attend.
Following the scrimmage, the 2010 FSU women's volleyball team will conduct a "Meet The Bulldogs" event where fans can meet with the student-athletes and coaches. Fans will also have an opportunity to receive autographs from the 2010 squad members.
The Bulldogs will also be involved in two more scrimmages on Tuesday, Aug. 24, and Friday, Aug. 27. Ferris State will participate in scrimmages at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Aug. 24 from 2-5 p.m. (EDT). FSU will then travel to University Center, Mich., on Aug. 27 for a scrimmage against Saginaw Valley State University. The scrimmage will be held from 2-5 p.m. (EDT).
Ferris State officially opens its 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3, with a pair of non-conference matches at the Ferris State Invitational in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs face Lock Haven and Glenville State in their first two matches of the tournament. FSU then concludes tourney play Saturday, Sept. 4, with contests against Minnesota State and Mercyhurst.
