Ferris State Receives National Volleyball Play of the Week Honor

Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week Award Press Release -- (PDF)

For the second year in a row, Ferris State University will be among the finalists for the Volleyball Market/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Play of the Year as the Bulldogs have been selected the week four winner for the 2010 season in an announcement made by the AVCA this Wednesday (Oct. 6).

Ferris State received the national weekly honor as the Bulldogs received more votes than the two other semifinalists - Ozark High School and Texas Christian University during the week-long voting period.

FSU's award-winning play occurred during a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at the University of Findlay (Ohio) on Sept. 26.  The 24-second play is highlighted by the Bulldogs'offensive fake out/ back-side set from sophomore setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt). The rally began with a perfect serve receive play by Ferris State who sent it back over to the Oilers. Findlay dug the attack and played it out sending the ball back to the Bulldogs. After being blocked by the Oilers, the Ferris State coverage picked up the rejected ball, passing it perfectly to FordyceFordyce faked out the Findlay middle blocker by back-setting to senior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central), who killed the ball for the point as Ferris State would go on to win the match by a 3-1 score.

The play, which can be viewed on the AVCA's YouTube channel by clicking here, will now be included among the other weeks' finalists to be eligible for the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Year.  The 2010 national play of the year will be announced at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet on Friday, Dec. 17, at the AVCA National Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

The 2010 Ferris State women's volleyball team is under the direction of head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm and assistant coach Theresa Beeckman.

A season ago, Ferris State earned the distinction of being the first-ever recipient of the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week (Sept. 30) based upon action in the second set of a home GLIAC match versus Grand Valley State (Sept. 15) which also involved both Samantha Fordyce and Arielle Goodson among others.
