The Ferris State University women's volleyball team officially wrapped up its 2008 season as the squad held its annual postseason awards banquet Saturday (Dec. 6) afternoon at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Senior setter-outside hitter Candice Marut (Pinconning) was the recipient of the team's Most Valuable Player Award. Marut registered a team second-best 375 assists in 24 matches this season while chalking up 151 digs to go with 15 service aces. The 2008 FSU co-captain produced 23 kills and had a .297 attack percentage. The 5-10 Marut notched double-digit digs in five matches this season. She finished eighth with 2,077 career assists on Ferris State's all-time records list while accumulating 48 service aces, 631 digs, 265 kills, 81 total blocks and a .219 hitting percentage in 108 matches during her collegiate career (2005-08).

Marut along with redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) received the Bulldog Award, which is presented to the player(s) who display the heart and desire of a Bulldog. The award recognizes the team member(s) who shows the highest level of all-around commitment, dedication and energy. Marut became a three-time winner of the award as she received the honor in 2004 during her redshirt season and then again in the 2007 campaign. Tobiczyk was Ferris State's leader in digs with 374 total and averaged 3.28 digs per set in 29 outings this fall. The 5-8 Tobiczyk, who was redshirted last season, turned in double-figure digs in a match on 21 occasions for the 2008 season.

The Coaches Award was presented to both senior setter-outside hitter Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) and sophomore defensive specialist Dana Ruttle (Reed City). Rich, a 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention selection, paced the Bulldogs in assists (629) and service aces (40) while placing second on the squad with a career season-high 315 digs in 29 matches. A 2008 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team pick, the 5-10 Rich compiled a career single-season best 165 kills with a .166 attack percentage while totaling a team third-most 62 total blocks. The 2008 FSU co-captain concluded her career (2005-08) ranking ninth among the Bulldogs' all-time leaders in assists (2,016), 22nd in digs (775), and 28th in service aces (96) in 83 career contests. Rich, a 2007 honorable mention All-GLIAC performer, became the ninth player in the program's history to attain at least 2,000 career assists proceeding Candice Marut. Ruttle enjoyed her most productive season at Ferris State this fall with career single-season highs in almost every statistical category. The 5-7 Ruttle garnered a squad fourth-best 164 digs and served up a team third-most 24 aces in 28 matches. She turned in nine double-digit single-match dig performances this season. The award, which is voted upon by the Ferris State volleyball coaching staff, is presented to the player(s) which demonstrates the most consistency on the court, in the classroom, and with her teammates.

Senior Awards were distributed to the 2008 squad's lone two senior student-athletes, Candice Marut and Andrea Rich. The pair helped Ferris State compile a 79-42 record (.653 winning pct.) in their four-year (2005-08) careers.

Ferris State, under the direction of 13th-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, ended the 2008 season at 16-13 overall with an 8-8 GLIAC North Division mark. The Bulldogs turned in the program's 11th consecutive winning campaign in 2008 as FSU also made its 11th straight GLIAC Postseason Tournament appearance.
