The Ferris State University women's soccer wrapped up its season-opening two non-conference match road trip in Minnesota this Sunday (Aug. 29) afternoon as the Bulldogs suffered a 2-0 loss to Winona State on Maxwell Field at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Winona, Minn.
Ferris State, which presently sports an 0-2-0 overall record this season, registered 10 total shots in the match with five being on goal. Freshman midfielder Merideth Wetterholt (Brighton) had a team-high two shots on net to lead the Bulldogs.
Winona State broke a scoreless deadlock in the second half as the Warriors' Lauren Sturdivant scored her first of two goals in the contest. Sturdivant took a feed following a scramble for the ball at midfield and placed the ball past FSU freshman goalkeeper Kara Stephens (St. Johns) for the match's first score just over five minutes into the stanza. Sturdivant would add an insurance marker with 25 seconds to go as Winona State gained the decision to even its overall record to 1-1 on the season.
Winona State held an 18-10 shots advantage, including an 8-3 edge in the first half. For Ferris State, Stephens totaled eight saves in 90 minutes while WSU goalkeeper Anna Belpedio made five stops.
Ferris State will now make preparations for its 2009 home opener this Tuesday (Sept. 1) as the Bulldogs host the Lewis Flyers at Big Rapids, Mich. A 2:30 p.m. (EDT) start time is slated for the non-conference matchup at the FSU Soccer Field.
