The Ferris State University women's soccer team dropped its 2009 season opener this Friday (Aug. 28) afternoon with a 6-0 loss to nationally 15th-ranked Minnesota State in a non-conference matchup at The Pitch at Gage Towers in Mankato, Minn.
The Mavericks, who outshot Ferris State by a 20-5 margin in the match, scored twice within the first 10 minutes of the opening half to take a 2-0 lead at intermission. Ferris State had four shots, one shot on goal, and five saves in the first period.
Minnesota State came out strong in the second half by adding four more scores in the second 45 minutes of action as Laura Leber tallied three unanswered goals for the Mavericks within a little over a 10-minute span.
Ferris State, which dropped to 0-1-0 overall for the 2009 campaign, received a seven-save performance from freshman goalkeeper Kara Stephens (St. Johns) in 86:02 minutes of action. Senior Kari Alsager (Mount Pleasant) came in relief of Stephens and didn't face a shot on net in the final 3:58 of the contest. For MSU, senior goalkeeper Sheila Reynolds concluded the match with one save to earn her 13th career shut-out.
Freshman forward Lauren Fortuna (Macomb/Sterling Heights Henry Ford II) accounted for the Bulldogs' lone shot on goal in the match.
Minnesota State totaled five corner kicks while Ferris State garnered one. FSU was outshot 9-4 in the opening half and 11-1 in the second half of play.
The Bulldogs' next action is this Sunday (Aug. 30) against Winona (Minn.) State. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (EDT) on the Warriors' home field.
