Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad continues a season-opening five game road stretch as the Bulldogs visit Indianapolis for a regional matchup between two nationally-ranked teams this Saturday (Nov. 17) at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis.
Saturday's game time has been pushed back to 5 p.m. (ET) due to the Greyhounds' NCAA Division II Football Playoff contest against Midwestern State (Texas) on campus. The women's basketball contest will follow Indianapolis' men's game against Northwood.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked 17th in the Division II Women's Basketball Bulletin Preseason National Rankings and 24th in the USA TODAY Sports/ESPN Division II Top 25 poll administered by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), will face the 11th-ranked Greyhounds in their third contest of the campaign.
Last weekend, Ferris State split two games in the United Electric Tipoff Classic hosted by Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky. FSU fell to Cedarville (Ohio) by a 59-51 count in Friday's (Nov. 9) season opener before bouncing back to notch their first win under new head coach Colleen Lamoreaux-Tate with a 62-58 triumph over Kentucky State in the consolation game on Saturday (Nov. 10).
The Bulldog women's squad, which was picked to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division for a second consecutive year, finished the 2011-12 women's basketball season with a 23-7 overall record, which matched the school record set previously in 2006-07 for most wins in a campaign. Last year marked the 15th time in the last 16 seasons the Bulldogs have registered double-digit wins in a campaign. FSU also reached the semifinals at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament last year.
FSU junior guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown) averaged 17.5 points, six rebounds and five assists per game as the Bulldogs split two games at the United Electric TipOff Classic. DeShone tallied 19 points with four boards, three assists and three steals in FSU's 59-51 setback versus Cedarville and then added 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against Kentucky State.
The Greyhounds started their 2012-13 seson with a convincing 79-48 home win over Lake Superior State on Saturday (Nov. 10) in Indianapolis. Indianapolis was tabbed as the favorites to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) East Division and are ranked 11th in the WBCA poll following a 19-win campaign a year ago.
UIndy recorded an impressive 13-1 home mark last season and reached the NCAA-II Midwest Regional for the fourth time in the last five years. Second-year head coach Constantin Popa returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from his 2011-12 squad, including GLVC leading scorer Kristin Turner (19.4 ppg.).
There will be no local FSU broadcast coverage of Saturday's non-conference contest, but Indianapolis will provide live internet statistics along with audio and video. Visit FerrisStateBulldogs.com for a complete listing of available links.
