A second-place regular-season finish has been forecast for the 2011 Ferris State University softball team in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) preseason poll results as announced Friday (March 18) afternoon by the conference office.

Ferris State picked up 20 points and one first-place vote in the GLIAC's North Division poll.  Saginaw Valley State was tabbed as the favorites with six first-place votes and 29 points.  Northwood received 16 points for third place while Grand Valley State (13 points) and Hillsdale (nine points) were chosen to finish fourth and fifth place, respectively.  Lake Superior State (three points) rounded out the six teams to comprise the North Division.

In the South Division, Ashland was selected to place first as a result of earning 24 points to go with four first-place votes.  Wayne State, the 2010 GLIAC Champions, claimed the other two first-place votes and recorded a second-most 22 points among the six South Division member schools.

The 2011 softball season in the GLIAC will feature the formation of a North and South Division for the first time in the conference's history.  The North Division will be comprised of Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, and Hillsdale.  The South Division members are Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican, Findlay, Tiffin, Ashland, and Wayne State.

Each of the GLIAC's 12 head softball coaches ranked the conference teams within their respective division, but weren't allowed to vote for their own squad. The first-place team on each ballot received six points while the second-place team earned five points, etc.

Ferris State was selected fourth with 57 points in the 2010 GLIAC preseason poll and went on to generate a 26-16 overall record, which included a third-place tying 17-9 conference mark.

The 2011 GLIAC Softball Tournament will be conducted May 6-8 at the Emerson Park Softball Complex in Midland, Mich., for the seventh consecutive year with winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Sub-Midwest Regional Tournament. The top eight teams with the best regular-season conference records qualify for the double-elimination league tourney.

Ferris State, which presently has posted a 3-9 overall record this season, starts GLIAC play this weekend (March 25-27) with a three-day road swing in Ohio.  The Bulldogs, under 14th-year head coach Keri Becker, will visit Lake Erie (March 25), Ohio Dominican (March 26), and Ashland (March 27) before returning home to entertain Davenport University next Tuesday, March 29, in its 2011 season home opener at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich.  Opening pitch for game one of the non-conference doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. (EDT).
