Big Rapids, Mich. - Sophomore goaltender Justin Kapelmaster (Coral Springs, Fla.) garnered Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Goaltender of the Week laurels after helping lead FSU to a home sweep this past weekend inside FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Kapelmaster picked up back-to-back victories, leading Ferris State to a league sweep of visiting Alaska. The sophomore from Coral Springs, Fla., made 53 stops in the series and posted a .930 save percentage – tops among WCHA goaltenders who played in both games last weekend.
He turned aside 21-of-22 shots Friday in a 3-1 victory, then made 31 stops – including 13 in the third period – Saturday as the Bulldogs completed the sweep with a 5-3 triumph.
Ferris State has now won three-straight games, all with the 2016-17 College Hockey News Freshman Goaltender of the Year in net.
This is Kapelmaster's first WCHA weekly award of the 2016-17 campaign and his fourth career honor (he earned two Rookie of the Week accolades and one Defensive Player of the Week nod last season).
Kapelmaster and the Bulldogs will next take on in-state rival Michigan State in a home-and-home set this weekend. Ferris State heads to East Lansing for the first game against MSU on Friday (Nov. 17) at Munn Ice Arena, before returning home for Saturday's contest in Big Rapids, which starts at 7:07 pm EST.
Tickets for Saturday's game are on sale now and can be purchased online at StarTickets.com or thru the FSU Athletics Ticket Office. Visit FerrisStateBulldogs.com for additional information or call (231) 591-2888.
