Ferris State Hockey Standout Gerald Mayhew Signs Pro Contract With American Hockey League's Iowa Wild

Big Rapids, Mich. - Standout forward Gerald Mayhew (Wyandotte), who wrapped up his four-year collegiate men's ice hockey career at Ferris State University this past weekend, has inked an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL).

The announcement was made by Iowa Wild General Manager Brent Flahr on Wednesday and he'll join the top affiliate of the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild. The head coach for Iowa is former Ferris State Hockey assistant coach Derek Lalonde, who's in his first season with the franchise after previously serving as head coach for the Toledo Walleye.

A 2017 Hobey Baker Award candidate as college hockey's top player, Mayhew finished as this season's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Scoring Champion and helped lead the Bulldogs to two NCAA Final Eight appearances along with a WCHA Regular-Season and Playoff Championship during his four-year career.

Over his four seasons at Ferris State, Mayhew played in 150 games for the Bulldogs. The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder forward scored 52 goals and added 67 goals for 119 collegiate points. Mayhew led the Bulldogs in scoring in each of the past three seasons, scoring 17 goals and adding 18 assists for 35 points in 33 games as a senior.

He posted career bests for assists and points as a junior, setting up 25 goals and totaling 41 points in 41 outings as the Bulldogs captured the WCHA Broadmoor Trophy Championship and came within a game of reaching the NCAA Frozen Four.

Mayhew played his final two games of a memorable collegiate career last weekend in the Bulldogs' WCHA Playoff setback on the road at Bowling Green.

Before his collegiate career at Ferris State, Mayhew played in the state of Iowa in Cedar Rapids from 2011-13, scoring 36 goals and totaling 77 points in 117 United States Hockey League (USHL) games for the RoughRiders.

After a six-game road trip with stops in Chicago, Rockford, Texas and Milwaukee, Iowa returns home to play the Milwaukee Admirals on March 18 in Des Moines at the Wells Fargo Arena.
