Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has climbed into the nation's top 10 this week in the national rankings.
The Bulldogs, who remain in first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) with a 8-2-1 overall record and a 5-0-1 league slate, climbed to 10th in this week's United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) National Poll released on Monday.
This week's number 10 national ranking represents the Bulldogs' highest placing in the poll since finishing second overall in the final 2011-12 USCHO.com Division I poll announced after FSU's historic appearance in the national championship game at the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four.
Additionally, Ferris State also moved up the national listing in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll by being ranked 13th in the country. FSU is riding a current seven-game (6-0-1) unbeaten streak, which is the second-longest active stretch in the nation.
Ferris State is one of two WCHA league members found in the USCHO national top 20 along with 16th-ranked Lake Superior State. Four other schools are listed just outside the top 20 among others receiving votes, including Minnesota State, Bowling Green, Alaska and Alaska-Anchorage.
The Bulldogs earned 476 total points to move up from 14th last week in the USCHO listing. Minnesota holds down the top spot in the poll with 996 points and 47 first-place votes with St. Cloud State second (914) and Providence third (873).
The USCHO.com Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey. FSU previously was ranked as high as number one in the country in the poll during the memorable 2011-12 season in which Ferris State eventually reached the NCAA Frozen Four and the national championship game.
The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll is conducted in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the five NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
Ferris State is the lone WCHA member school found in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll with Lake Superior State and Bowling Green earning votes.
