Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team dropped a heart-breaking 3-2 decision to the Alaska Nanooks in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series finale inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday (Oct. 27) night.

The Nanooks scored the game-winning goal with less than a minute to play in the third period as they were able to depart with a series' split against the defending CCHA Regular-Season Champions in the opening weekend of league play.

The Bulldogs tallied the lone goal of the first period when junior center Cory Kane scored his second goal of the season at 10:39 off an assist from junior wing Justin DeMartino.

Alaska answered back at 12:47 of the second frame when junior forward Cody Kunyk notched the Nanooks' first goal of the evening with the pass coming from junior wing Colton Beck.

The two teams remained tied at a goal apiece heading into the third period.  Alaska struck first as Beck tallied the Nanook's second goal of the night and his second of the year at 9:07 off an assist by Kunyk.

However, just over five minutes later at 14:12, the Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 when junior wing Garrett Thompson scored his second goal of the season with senior wing Kyle Bonis picking up the assist.

Overtime was not to be, however, as the Nanooks scored the final goal of the night at 19:10.  UAF freshman forward Tyler Morley notched his third goal of the year for the game-winner with senior forward Jarret Granberg on the pass.

Ferris State dropped to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCHA with the setback while the Nanooks improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play.

Bulldog sophomore goaltender CJ Motte totaled 36 saves on the night for the Bulldogs while sophomore goaltender Sean Cahill made 23 saves for the Nanooks.

Ferris State was outshot by a 39-25 count and the Nanooks posted a decisive 17-5 edge in the third and final period.  FSU was also called for six penalties totaling 12 minutes compared to two calls for four minutes by Alaska.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend (Nov. 2-3) as they host the nationally-ranked Miami Redhawks. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET) on both Friday and Saturday night inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
