A familiar face is back with the Ferris State University men's ice hockey program as Dave Cencer has been appointed the Bulldogs' new strength and conditioning coach along with video coordinator in an announcement made by head coach Bob Daniels.
Cencer served four seasons (2005-09) as Ferris State's director of hockey operations and the team's video coordinator prior to his departure from FSU early last summer.
"We're elated to have someone of Dave's caliber back with the program," said 19th-year head coach Bob Daniels. "The success achieved by last season's team can be directly traced to Dave's efforts during his previous time at Ferris State.
"Dave is extremely knowledgable with all facets of strength and conditioning not to mention video software," added Daniels.
Cencer spent the 2009-10 campaign with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Rockford (Ill.) IceHogs in a video coach position after accepting a position with the organization in June 2009. Rockford is an affiliate of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL).
While at Rockford, Cencer coordinated all the opponent pre-scouting and live breakdown of games. He was responsible for coordinating all video for both teams (Chicago and Rockford) and was involved in some of the organization's strength and conditioning programs.
"I believe Dave's time this past year with Chicago and Rockford was important," Daniels said. "The experience and knowledge he gained in that position should translate well to our program."
A certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Cencer completed his master's degree in Sports Fitness from the United States Sports Academy. Work from his master's program studies received national recognition and was published in a pair of sport science journals. At Ferris State, Cencer directed his focus with the Bulldog hockey student-athletes on nutrition, position-specific training, speed/power mechanics and injury prevention.
A native of Big Rapids, Mich., Cencer spent the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons conducting video analysis for the Bulldogs on a voluntary basis. He has served as an instructor and co-director at the Ferris State Hockey Skills Center since 2005, worked as a coach at the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association bantam state festival from 2008-10 and assisted in strength and conditioning testing at the 2008 Philadelphia Flyers (National Hockey League) Player Development Camp.
Cencer received a bachelor's degree in Communications Arts from Franciscan University (Ohio) in 2003 and was also an undergraduate at Northern Michigan University from 1999-01.
A member of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Cencer and his wife, Anna (Crew), reside in Big Rapids. An avid marathon runner and an Ironman triathlete, Cencer has recorded top age-group finishes in more than 10 triathalon races and is training to continue his Ironman racing in 2011.
