Scott Wietecha (Wolverine Lake), a senior defenseman on the 2010-11 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, will be lacing up his skates for the Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) after inking a standard player contract with the organization this past Friday (March 18).
Wietecha will play on defense and wear jersey number 11 for Elmira, which is midst its 11 season of play and fourth year in the ECHL. The Jackals, who are under the direction of head coach Robbie Nichols, are an affiliate of both the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators. This season, Elmira has presently posted a 31-26-6-3 (71 league points) in the Atlantic Division of the ECHL's Eastern Conference.
The Ferris State skater registered a team seventh-most 14 points on two goals with a career season-best 12 assists in 39 outings for the 2010-11 season. Wietecha also produced a plus five efficiency rating to go along with a career season-high 31 blocked shots and one power-play goal. The 6-2, 208-pound defenseman earned the CCHA's Defenseman of the Week Award (Feb. 14) following his series performance in a two-game home sweep of Alabama-Huntsville (Feb. 11-12) in which he notched a combined three points on a goal with two helpers. Wietecha garnered at least a point in 11 contests this season, which including a pair of two-point efforts versus Alabama-Huntsville (Feb. 11) and at Western Michigan (March 11) in a CCHA Tournament Quarterfinal-Round series.
Wietecha closed out his four-year (2007-11) career with 51 points on 12 goals and 39 assists in 126 games. He tallied six power-play lamplighters, three game-winning markers, 79 blocked shots, and a plus 16 efficiency rating. Wietecha accumulated double-figure points totals in each of his four seasons with the Crimson and Gold. Following his 2007-08 freshman season, Wietecha was honored as the team's recipient of the Plus/Minus Award after compiling a squad-leading plus 16 efficiency rating.
Wietecha is the second member of the 2010-11 Bulldogs to sign with a professional team as left wing Mike Embach (Orland Park, Ill.) recently inked with a tryout contract with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Ferris State finished the 2010-11 campaign at 18-16-5 overall with a fifth-place 12-12-4-3 (43 league points) record in the CCHA. The 18 victories by the Bulldogs represented a tie for eighth-most single-season triumphs in the program's history.
