Ferris State University junior Zach Redmond (Traverse City) has been chosen as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Defenseman of the Week for his performance in the nationally-ranked Bulldog men's ice hockey team's league road series sweep of Notre Dame this past weekend (Jan. 9-10). The announcement was made this Monday (Jan. 11) by the league office.
Redmond turned in a three-point series against Notre Dame this last weekend (Jan. 9-10) to not only help Ferris State extend its current league unbeaten streak to a school-record 12 CCHA contests (10-0-2), but more importantly to move the Bulldogs into a tie for first-place in the current CCHA standings. Ferris State is currently 16-4-2 overall with a first-place tying 10-2-2-2 (34 points) league mark.
The FSU blueliner accounted for the game-winning goal in Saturday's (Jan. 9) 5-2 victory over Notre Dame and also picked up an assist en route to receiving CCHA Perani Cup First Star of the Game recognition. He then garnered an assist to go with a blocked shot in Sunday's (Jan. 10) 4-2 decision against the Fighting Irish.
This is the third weekly honor for Redmond this season to date after the 6-2, 201-pound defender received the league award earlier this campaign (Oct. 26 and Dec. 14). The selection of Redmond represents the eighth time in which a Ferris State skater has claimed weekly kudos from the CCHA.
This season, Redmond has produced a team third-most tying 19 points on four goals and 15 assists in 22 contests. He has tallied at least a point in 14 outings, which includes a current three-game point streak with a combined four points (2-2=4).
Redmond, a two-time (2008-09 and 2009-10) CCHA Preseason All-Conference Honorable Mention, has accumulated 62 career points with 13 goals and 49 assists in 97 games. The 2008-09 Ferris State Hockey's Most Valuable Player Award recipient has totaled six power-play goals, one short-handed tally, and three game-winning lamplighters during his Bulldog career.
Ferris State, under 18th-year head coach Bob Daniels, is off to its second-best start in the program's history and will face the nationally-ranked Miami (Ohio) RedHawks this weekend (Jan. 15-16) in a battle for first place in the CCHA at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. This Friday's (Jan. 15) series opener gets underway at 7:05 p.m. (EST) while Saturday's (Jan. 16) matchup begins at 5:05 p.m. (EST).
