Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's basketball squads head to Sault Ste. Marie for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader against the Lake Superior State Lakers this Saturday (Dec. 16) at Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie.
The women's game will tipoff first at 1 p.m. (ET) followed by a showdown between two top-25 ranked men's squads starting at 3 p.m. (ET). The men's game has been noted as one of the Division II "Games Of The Week" to watch by at least one source this week.
Both games will be carried live by local flagship station Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network with online coverage available at FerrisStateBulldogs.com starting at 12:30 p.m. The twinbill represents the final league games for both FSU squads until the New Year.
The Ferris State women's squad is off to a 6-4 start this year and will be looking to get back on track in the GLIAC following a pair of tightly-contested setbacks on the road last weekend at Northwood and Saginaw Valley State. LSSU is still searching for its first victory of the season as the Lakers enter the tilt 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
Meanwhile, the Bulldog men's squad is off to the best start in school history at 12-0 overall and ranked fifth in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II National Poll this week. FSU is also third in the Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) rankings and perfect at 4-0 in the GLIAC to date.
Lake Superior State's men's squad holds a 9-1 overall record and is also 4-0 in conference play. The Lakers have won their last six games in a row with the lone loss coming at Cedarville (Ohio) on Nov. 18. LSSU is ranked 18th in the NABC Coaches poll and 17th in the D2SIDA rankings this week.
The FSU men's team holds a 81-56 lead heading into Saturday's 138th all-time meeting versus LSSU. The Bulldogs have won 17 of the last 32 series' matchups overall with the two squads splitting a pair of games a year ago. FSU beat Lake Superior State 111-103 in the Soo on Jan. 12 before the Lakers responded with an 83-79 triumph on Feb. 9 at FSU's Wink Arena. The league matchup has been one of the GLIAC's best rivalries on the hardwood in recent years.
On the women's side, the Lakers maintain a 52-43 advantage heading into Saturday's 96th meeting. LSSU has won 19 of the last 35 meetings, but Ferris State has captured five of the last eight meetings. However, last year Lake Superior State won both matchups by scores of 73-59 in Sault Ste. Marie and 58-54 in Big Rapids.
Following Saturday's action, both Bulldog squads will play non-league games for their final action prior to the holiday break on Monday (Dec. 18) night. The men's team takes on Lewis (Ill.) in a regional matchup at Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming (Mich.) with the FSU women facing NCAA Division I Bowling Green at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio. Both games will start at 7 p.m. (ET).
