Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball program and first-year head coach Andy Bronkema have announced plans for an alumni day and evening contest on Saturday, Nov. 2, at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.
The alumni event will feature a full slate of activities and all former Bulldog men's basketball players are invited to attend. The public is also encouraged to attend the evening alumni game to watch both the current FSU men's squad and the
alumni in action.
The day will begin watching the Ferris State football team in action versus Wayne State at Top Taggart Field. A tailgate reception will take place starting at 11 a.m. (ET) prior to the noon kickoff for all former men's basketball players. After the game, the Bulldogs will will hold a dinner for all past players.
The alumni basketball action will take place that evening. A veteran's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. (ET) with the alumni game starting at 7:30 p.m. (ET) followed by a postgame get together at Buffalo Wild Wings in Big Rapids.
The basketball alumni event will include a game for all former players. The veterans game will consist of two alumni teams that include all levels of ability and conditioning. The feature game at 7:30 will be a full contest with select alumni taking on the current Ferris State team in an exciting Old Stars vs Current Stars format.
"We currently have more than 13 committed players to return and participate in the day's events and are hoping to at least double that number by Nov. 2," said Bronkema. "Last year, we brought back the Alumni Game tradition and our team lost to the alumni. This year, we will be ready.
"We have so many talented alumni and those players own the record books. We won't play a more talented team all year so we'll have to rely on teamwork and conditioning," he added.
Former Bulldog players are encouraged to attend the day's events and/or participate in the alumni contest. To RSVP, please contact head coach Andy Bronkema at (231) 437-0567 or via email at: AndyBronkema@ferris.edu.
Bronkema takes over a Ferris State program with a long track record of success that includes more than 1,000 all-time victories, 13 GLIAC Championships and nine NCAA Tournament appearances. Ferris State wrapped up the 2012-13 season with a 14-13 overall record and the Bulldogs reached the GLIAC Postseason Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years, which ranks as one of the conference's top showings over the past decade.
Overall, Ferris State has won four league championships and twice reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in the past decade. FSU also posted an impressive 10-1 mark at home in league regular-season action during the 2012-13 season at Jim Wink Arena.
A strong nucleus is expected back for the Bulldogs this fall in Bronkema's debut season with 10 letterwinners back from a year ago.
Prior to the alumni event, the Bulldogs will play a pair of exhibition contests at home to open the 2013-14 campaign. FSU hosts Madonna on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. (ET) before facing Davenport inside Wink Arena on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. (ET).
