Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University football squad has continued to receive recognition following a second consecutive NCAA Division II National Quarterfinal finish this past fall as the Bulldogs recently claimed a major award and had seven student-athletes chosen to the 2017 Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-Super Region Three Team.
For the second year in a row, Ferris State junior defensive end Zach Sieler (Pinckney) received the region's Defensive Player of the Year Award.
The Bulldogs had four first-team All-Region choices in Sieler along with junior offensive guard Nic Sawyer (Ann Arbor/Saline) and junior offensive tackle Devon Johnson (Aurora, Ill.) in addition to senior cornerback Tavierre Thomas (Detroit/Allen).
Bulldog senior center Jake Daugherty (Big Rapids) garnered Football Gazette All-Super Region Three Second-Team laurels on the offensive side with senior defensive tackle Chris Okoye (Novi/Detroit catholic Central) named to the second team defensive unit. Finally, the Bulldogs also had a third team honoree in senior linebacker Terrell Porter (Detroit/Berkley).
All seven Bulldog honorees were All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) choices this fall. Both Sieler and Thomas have been consensus All-America choices by every organization to date while Daugherty also received acclaim as an All-American from at least one source for the third-straight year.
The first and second-team All-Region selections will all advance to the national ballot from which the 2017 Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America Team will be named later this month.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
Ferris State finished the 2017 season with an 11-2 overall record under head coach Tony Annese. FSU's 11 wins this season marks the fourth consecutive year in which the Bulldogs have achieved the feat, which represents the first time in school history in which FSU has done so over four-straight years.
This fall, the Bulldogs also made their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs and reached the national quarterfinal round for the second-straight year after making a D2 National Semifinal appearance last season.
