Big Rapids, Mich. - The 2010 Ferris State University football team held its first fall scrimmage on Saturday (Aug. 21) morning before a number of parents, fans and community members at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs scrimmaged for over two hours in the morning with several offensive units working against the defense on the Mondo Ecofill artificial surface.  FSU also spent time working on various special teams phases and wrapped up the scrimmage with red zone work near the endzone.

Junior Tom Schneider, sophomore Robert Banaszak and redshirt freshman Michael Buday all split time taking repetitions with several different offensive groupings as did a group of younger quarterbacks at other points in the scrimmage.

"We got in a lot of good work in this scrimmage," said FSU head coach Jeff Pierce. "It was a good chance to see where we are with the consistencies. At this point, we have a lot of our offense and a lot of our defense installed.

"We want to see how our guys perform and we got a chance to get a lot of guys in the game to see where they are in this competition at those positions which is critical," he added.

Big plays were found on both sides of the ball, including several scoring plays both on the ground and thru the air from the offensive units along with a couple of key stops in the redzone by the defense.  The Bulldogs also worked on special teams play throughout the scrimmage in an effort to help solidify the kicking game.

The Bulldogs are next scheduled to practice all of this coming week, including three two-a-day sessions leading up to the final preseason scrimmage.

The squad's final scrimmage will be held prior to FSU's annual media/fans photo day activities on Friday, Aug. 27. The final scrimmage will begin at 9 a.m. (EDT) with the media/photo day taking place at 1 p.m. (EDT).

Ferris State will kickoff its 102nd season of varsity competition Friday, Sept. 3, against the Hillsdale Chargers in a 7 p.m. (EDT) non-conference contest at HC's Muddy Waters Stadium in Hillsdale, Mich.

The Bulldogs then open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play the following week with their first home contest of the 2010 season versus Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Sept. 11.  Kickoff for the "Honoring American Heroes" Day tilt is scheduled for 6 p.m. (EDT) with a variety of activities taking place throughout the day.
