Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University Athletics
Department recently announced the appointment of Stacy
Smith as the school's new cheerleading head coach.
Smith will guide the Bulldogs' cheerleading program and takes over
following the recent departure of former head coach Amber Troyer.
"I am extremely excited to have Stacy join our staff
and give direction to our cheerleading squad," said FSU Athletics
Director Tom Kirinovic. "She brings a
refreshing perspective for the squad to use as their focus for
contributing to our home game environment.
The students on the team are excited to have her as their coach and
I join them with that enthusiasm."
Most recently, Smith served since 2008 as the interim director of
athletics and community education for the Kent City (Mich.)
Community School District where she was responsible for the
supervision of all athletics programs, including scheduling,
budgeting, rules compliance and additional duties.
While with Kent City, Smith has also served as president of the
Michigan Cheer Judges Association (MCJA) based in East
Lansing. During her time as president of the organization,
Smith has been responsible for rules development, competitive cheer
rule interpretation and has worked as a color analyst for the state
championships via Fox Sports Detroit. Since 2002, Smith has
also assisted the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA)
as an independent contractor working in a similar role.
A founding member of the Competitive Cheer Coaches Association of
Michigan, Smith is a past member of the MCCA Scholarship Program, a
former executive member of the Allegan Chamber of Commerce and a
member of the Plainwell Chamber of Commerce.
Smith's past includes significant cheerleading experience at the
prep level. She was the Plainwell Varsity Cheer Coach from
1989-2000 and led the squad to a Class B State
Championship in 2000. Her teams also won three
Wolverince Conference Championships, two regional crowns and
finished fourth in the state in 1999. Smith was honored as
the CCCAM/MHSCA State & Regional Coach of the Year in
2000 and claimed conference coach of the year honors three
times. From 2002-03, she guided the varsity cheer team at
Portage Northern, helping the squad to a divisional title in
2002.
In addition to her past coaching experience, Smith has also played
a role as an official and worked several state championship level
events. She was chosen as the MCJA Official of the Year in
2008. Additionally, she's served on numerous committees and
other various roles throughout her prep cheerleading tenure.
Along with her cheerleading background, Smith has also been active
in a number of community organizations and coached as a volunteer
at the youth level.
The Ferris State University Cheerleading program helps support
intercollegiate athletics and the university by helping raise the
level of fan support at various events. In addition, the team often
serves as ambassadors of the university.
