Big Rapids, Mich. - A new era of Ferris State University Athletics officially began on Wednesday (Sept. 15) as Perk Weisenburger was introduced as the new FSU Athletics Director in an afternoon press conference held at the Wheeler Pavilion in Big Rapids.

Weisenburger was appointed to the position two weeks ago and started his FSU duties last Friday (Sept. 10) before being introduced to both media and community members today.  A reception took place following the press conference for FSU faculty/staff members, studnet-athletes and invited community guests.

The "Meet The AD" press conference included comments from Weisenburger as well as Ferris State University President Dr. David L. Eisler and Vice President for Administration and Finance Jerry Scoby, who oversaw the search process.  Media members were also given the opportunity to ask questions.

A Michigan native, Weisenburger most recently served on the senior staff as the Associate Athletics Director for External Operations at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas since 2005.  He’s a 1979 graduate of Central Michigan University and the former Director of Athletics at NCAA Division I Illinois State University for five years.

His appointment came following a nationwide search and screening process that yielded more than 75 applicants and involved a 10-member search committee.

He replaces former FSU Athletics Director Tom Kirinovic, who retired in June after more than 27 years as a member of the Bulldog Athletics Department.

"It's a pleasure to be here and I'm quite honored to be the athletics director at Ferris State University," Weisenburger said.  "I was impressed with this university before I took the job and after being here a few days, I'm convinced that this was a great decision for our family.

"It's exciting to be back in the state of Michigan and at an instiution of this caliber which has a commitment to students, student-athletes and also the competitive values that we want to instill in our teams," he added.

As the new athletics director, Weisenburger will be responsible for the operations of Ferris State’s athletics department, which currently sponsors 15 intercollegiate varsity sports (eight for women and seven for men). Fourteen of the sports participate at the NCAA Division II level in the highly-competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) while men's hockey competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

"Today is a very exciting day for athletics at Ferris State," said President Eisler.  "We're proud of our student-athletes, coaches along with men and women who work in our athletics department.  I'm especially proud of our announcement today because I feel we've found precisely the right person to lead athletics at Ferris State University."
