Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University Athletics Department concluded the 2012-13 campaign ranked among the nation's top 10% out of more than 300 NCAA Division II institutions for all-sports success, according to the final Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings that were recently released.

FSU finished the year ranked 32nd nationally with 407 total points this past season.  The Bulldogs totaled 165 points in the fall and added 61.5 points in the winter season to go with 180.50 points this spring.

Ferris State earned points in the fall on a 13th-place national finish in men's cross country and a 22nd-place performance in women's cross country along with a 17th-place tying finish by women's volleyball, which received an NCAA Tournament berth.  In the winter season, the Bulldogs received points via a 14th-place performance in women's indoor track.

Finally, this spring, FSU scored 47.5 points in women's golf and 50.5 points in men's tennis as both made NCAA appearances.  The men's golf team also made an NCAA berth and totaled 34 points with the softball team's run to the national tournament claiming 25 points.  In addition, Ferris State came away with 23.5 points in women's track and field during the outdoor season.

Ferris State placed fourth of five Great lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member schools found in the top 40 nationally.  Grand Valley State ranked second with Ashland third, Findlay 26th, FSU 32nd and Wayne State 39th in the final listing.

A year ago, Ferris State concluded the 2011-12 campaign with a school-best 15th-place national finish. FSU compiled 514.50 points overall last campaign, which was also the school's highest point production since the standings were implemented.

This year's 32nd-place finish was tied for fourth-best in school history in the director's cup, which dates back to the 1995-96 campaign.  Meanwhile, the 407 total points were third-best in school history.  In all, the Bulldogs have now placed in the nation's top 40 a total of 10 times over the last 18 years.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.

Besides placing 15th nationally, Ferris State placed tied for fourth in the final 2012-13 GLIAC President's Trophy Standings as the Bulldogs secured a top-five finish for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and 36th time overall.
