Issue 2- Inside Bulldog Athletics With The Athletic Director

Happy New Year Bulldog Fans,

I would like to express my thanks to those who have joined the "I'm A Bulldog" Campaign and become members of the recently-established Bulldog Athletic Association (BAA).  I would also like to extend an invitation for those who care about Bulldog Athletics to join as our goal is to have 1,000 individuals contribute a minimum of $250 annually.  Presently, our primary task is to increase our scholarship funding and enchance our operating budgets so we can keep pace with those who we directly compete with.

There's no question your support is critical in providing our student-athletes and coaches with the means to strive for excellence academically, athletically and in life.

Bulldogs Among The Top
I'm happy to announce Ferris State is presently third place among the 14 conference members in the 2010-11 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) President's Trophy standings thru the end of the fall sports season.  The Bulldogs, who are one point away from tying for second place in the current GLIAC standings, claimed a conference championship title in men's golf this fall.

U.S. 131 Showdown
This Saturday (Jan. 29) is the much anticipated "U.S. 131 Showdown" at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., as our Bulldog men's and women's basketball teams play against our West Michigan rival Grand Valley State.  The men's contest will feature a battle for first place in the GLIAC's North Division.  The conference doubleheader is being billed as the "U.S. 131 Showdown" and commences at 6 p.m. (EST) with the women's game followed by the men's contest at 8 p.m. (EST).  Prior to the games, the FSU Alumni Association is sponsoring a pre-game alumni reception in the Van Andel Banquet Room from 5-8 p.m. (EST) with free appetizers and beverages for all Bulldog fans.  What a wonderful event this will be and we certainly hope you can attend and cheer on the Bulldogs! (Click for more information).

Bulldog Hockey Reunion
Reconnecting with former Bulldog student-athletes and coaches is important as we branch the past with the future.  As a result, the BAA will be holding the Continue The Ferris State Hockey Legacy Reunion for past players and coaches from the 1979-89 teams and this exciting event will be held in conjunction with the Feb. 19 game against Notre Dame.  Between the first and second periods, those attendees will be introduced.  Following the game, a social will be held in the Bulldog Hockey Locker room lounge area.  A group ticket price of $6 will be available for those family members and/or guests of the attendees. What a great way for Bulldog hockey fans to interact will those who helped establish our nationally-recognized Division I program. (Click for more information).

Hockey On Ice Tailgate Event
The third annual FSU Alumni Association's Hockey Tailgate On Ice event will be held Friday, Feb. 18, in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Ewigleben Sports Complex.  The event starts at 5:30 p.m. (EST) and will conclude at 7 p.m. (EST) prior to the Bulldog men's ice hockey game against Notre Dame.  Cost is $15 per person, which includes a ticket to the game along with parking and the tailgate.  Current Bulldog hockey season ticket holders are also welcome to attend for a $5 charge per individual.  To register and purchase tickets to this exciting event by credit card, please click on this link.  (Click for more information).

Making A Difference
The FSU Athletics Department recently received a generous donation from Dr. Bob and Kim Buckingham for the purchase of computerized sports injury software.  This software will allow use to better track injury data, student-athlete data and injury statistics.  By viewing this injury data, our athletic training staff will be able to look at injury trends and hopefully at injury prevention.

Exposure
Our nationally-ranked men's ice hockey team has already appeared on either national and/or regional television four times this month, such as CBS College Sports and FS Detroit (Click for article).  The Bulldogs will do so for a fifth time on Thursday, Jan. 27, as we host Michigan State in a FS Detroit televised contest starting at 7:35 p.m. (EST) in Big Rapids.  Our most recent televised game aired by Comcast Television against Michigan on Jan. 15 was before a sellout Ewigleben Ice Arena crowd.  I'm hopeful you will be able to attend the home contest versus Michigan State and help us in our goal of attaining a sellout crowd for the second straight game.

I'm pleased to announce that our fans can follow all the action live when Bulldog teams are on the road through an internet audio broadcast via UStream (Click for more information).

Congratulations!
I continue to be impressed with the quality of student-athletes at Ferris State and their achievements.  We recently had 48 student-athletes named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic and All-Academic Excellence Teams for the 2010 fall sports season.  In fact, 25 of FSU's honorees earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence recognition for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher (Click for article).  Two of those student-athletes, Tina Muir of women's cross country and football's Tom Schneider were selected as recipients of the GLIAC Commissioner's Award for the 2010 fall as a result of excelling both in the classroom and on the fields of play (Click for article).

Approximately 13 student-athletes earned their degrees at the 2010 fall commencement held on Dec. 18, 2010 in Wink Arena.  Congratulations and best wishes in your professional career.

Women's volleyball senior Arielle Goodson was named to the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Second Team.  In doing so, Arielle became the 11th individual in the Bulldog volleyball program's history to receive this lofty honor and the 15th time in which a FSU women's volleyball student-athlete has garnered such accolades on a national scale (Click for article).

Our women's basketball team, under head coach Tracey Dorow, pulled off the upset as the Bulldogs knocked off nationally eighth-ranked Michigan Tech, 63-60, on Jan. 20 at Wink Arena (Click for article).  The victory marked the second time this season our women's basketball team has defeated a ranked opponent at home.

Coaching Milestone
For the third time this season, one of our coaches reached a milestone as men's ice hockey head coach Bob Daniels earned his 300th victory at Ferris State in a league win at Bowling Green State on Jan. 7 (Click for article).

Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame
I'm pleased to announce an online nomination form has been created for the Ferris State University Athletics Hall of Fame in which individuals may nominate a former Bulldog student-athlete, coach, administrator, faculty or staff member.  To access the online form, please click on this link.

True Bulldog Supporter Will Be Missed
The Bulldog Athletics Family is mourning the loss of former longtime ticket manager Paul Davis, who passed away on Jan. 17.  A Ferris State graduate, retired from FSU in 2004 after working 34 years in the university's business office.  As a testament to Paul, he never missed a home football or basketball game from 1970-2005 while serving as ticket manager.  Memorial donations in Paul's name can be made to Ferris State University Athletics (Bulldog Athletic Association).  Our sympathies go out to Paul's family and friends (Click for article).
